HISTORY

The history of the poblamiento of Negro River can be transformed in the origin and development of the three main centers of establishment of its inhabitants: Viedma, the High Valley and San Carlos de Bariloche.In 1779 Francisco Fernandez de Viedma it disembarked in the South coast of the Negro River and installed there to the colonos that accompanied it.But a great flood both forced them to months to be transferred to the opposite border giving origin to Carmen de Patagones.Nevertheless the South coast soon was repoblada and thus the town was born of Mercedes de Patagones, being developed the agricultural activities in the inferior valley of the river.In 1879 the town took the name from Viedma in tribute to its founder and, when Negro River was constituted like National Territory in 1885, it happened to be its capital.
